Tackling the Garage in a few easy steps…
Full disclosure…Block some time. This disorganization wasn’t created overnight and neither will the clean up.
Garages tend to be the last stop before items in your household get moved to the street, storage unit or donation bin. But, if organized well, your Garage is the best and most universal storage place for making households run well.
Here’s how I organized and labeled my best friend’s garage in a few hours…and we didn’t get rid of anything!
First — most organizers will advise that your completely empty your garage. I have never done this. This seems daunting and exhausting. And worse, what will happen when all your belongings are spread in your driveway or lawn and it starts to rain? A complete disaster will ensue. Instead, I advise, focusing on a small portion of your garage and start sorting. Make piles of similar items to get oriented with the volume of similar items.
Second — Separate piles by major categories such as Tools, Fishing, Golf, Holiday, Gardening, etc. And Donation. It’s important to be discerning. If you have not used or seen / remembered an item in your garage and you suddenly discover it in the process of learning your garage, please know that there is someone in your town that would love to LOVE your item. Consider donating it. Place it in the Donation Pile.
Third— Sorting through your garage will help you determine the amount and size of organizing bins and storage solutions that your need. I personally prefer sturdy opaque bins [insert link] with simple labeling.
Last — Let’s get pretty! Place your items in well labeled bins.
